17-07-2012 Stone Roses - Milan

THE STONE ROSES @ Ippodromo del Galoppo, Milan, 17/07/2012

Today, I’m glad to talk about my personal Stone Roses’ experience, one of the best gig I ever seen in my whole life.

First of all, I want to briefly introduce this band to everybody who don’t know them. Formed by four guys, Ian Brown (singer), John Squire (guitarist), Gary “Mani” Mounfield (bassist) and Alan “Reni” Wren (drummer), they are an English band from Manchester, born in 1983, and reunited in 2011. Collocated in the “Madchester” scene, their sound is characterized by hypnotic disco beats, catchy melodies, and Sixties style.

The venue was the 17th of July at “Ippodromo del Galoppo”, near San Siro stadium in Milan. The location was really nice and well organized, but unfortunately it had nothing to do with Heaton Park, in which the Roses had previously played.

At 8 pm former Clash guitarist, Mick Jones, came up with The Justice Tonight Band, a group of 10 people with some old glories like Pete Wylie & The Farm. Not bad as a beginning, even if few people were already there. I had to wait the beginning of the Roses to see around 3000 people in front of the stage.

Performing all together songs like “Train In Vain”, “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”, “Rock The Casbah”, and “Bankrobber”, milestones of the English band, the effect was very entertaining, and reminded me the movie “The Cottmitments”. The public seemed to enjoy as well, as the artists on the stage (I also got a kiss from Kosmo Vinyl!).

At 9.30 pm, introduced by a song of Diana Ross and The Supremes, the Stone Roses arrived.

The crowd went wild.

In that moment, adrenaline flowed through your body, and the only thing that you could do was just wait that Ian started to sing.

And when “I wanna be adored” began, atmosphere became magical.

The first half of the gig was a kind of warming, with songs like “Mersey Paradise”, “(Song for my) Sugar Spun Sister” and “Sally Cinnamon”. Continuing with the classical setlist of the tour, the beautiful and long “Fools Gold” was the turning point: after that, they went to the heart of the gig. The rhythms were more pressing and the Roses took a liking to drive us crazy with “Waterfall/Don’t Stop”, “Love Spreads” and “Made of Stone”. But the peak was reached with the closing three songs: “This is the One”, “She bangs the drums” and “I am the Resurrection”, anthem that represents the band.

That was definitely the end: no more songs, no encore, just the four Mancunian saying thanks to everybody and throwing various objects. It was time to going home, but not before reflecting a bit.

In general everything was great, the gig has by far exceeded my expectations and, in my opinion, The Stone Roses got back in good shapes, even if it’s difficult for me to make an objective comparison than twenty years ago.

I just wanted to tell what I felt and what I saw that awesome day. I wish you thousands concerts like that.
